Buildings that are located in high seismic areas have always been structurally designed to handle the earthquakes stresses. However, the mechanical piping systems have not been seismically designed until recently.
The International Building Code requires that all MEP system supports be seismically restrained. This is extremely important in hospitals and other essential emergency buildings during times of seismic activity. Buildings need to not only be structurally designed to keep the building from collapsing, but also the mechanical systems are required to be seismically designed so the building can stay operational.
